Kampo - Japanese Herbal Treatment

Kampo consultations are customized for each individual. Each patient receives close personal attention from his or her herbal advisor. The treatment plan comes from the patient’s uniqueness as reflected in the Kampo history and physical exam. Each individual formula may be used for many different diseases therefore each patient receives a standardized Kampo prescription that fits their individuality.

Diagnostic method

The four types of diagnostic methods are inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiring and to palpate.

Inspection refers to the process in which the advisor examines the systemic and regional changes in the patient’s vitality, color, and appearance.

Auscultation and Olfaction determine the pathological changes by listening to the sounds made by a patient’s internal organs especially the heart, lungs, and abdominal organs and by smelling.

Inquiry is the process of questioning the patient or the patient’s companion about the onset and progression of the disease, present symptoms and signs, and other conditions related to the disease.

Palpate is a method of examining the body by feeling with the hands and fingers to distinguish between swellings that are solid and those that are filled with fluids.

The human body is an organic entity. Regional pathological changes may affect the whole body and the pathological changes of the internal organs often manifest on the surface of the body. The herbal advisor needs to observe and analyze the external manifestations of the patient to determine what is happening within the body.
